Teaching & Learning Methodology

The department utilises a blend of traditional and modern pedagogical tools to bridge the gap between text and context.

ICT-Enabled Classrooms: Use of projectors for film screenings of adapted literary texts (e.g., Shakespearean plays or Tennessee Williams' dramas).

Interactive Learning: Classes are conducted like dialogues instead of one-way chalk and talk to build confidence and pedagogical skills.

Remedial Support: Special attention and remedial classes are organized for slow learners, identified through internal continuous evaluations.

Evaluation: A mix of surprise tests, group discussions, and traditional sessional examinations.

Beyond the Classroom

The department fosters a vibrant intellectual culture through several initiatives:

Departmental Seminars: The department regularly organises seminars, talks and conferences. Recently the department has conducted an add-on course on Translation Studies with an aim to prepare students for print and electronic media.

Film-making: Groups of students are given film-making assignments. They go out to explore the district and create short informative and creative videos ranging from gothic horror films to documentary films on the art of cane mat-making. They learn how to work as a group and critically comment on issues. These short films are shown to a mixed audience of students from all departments.

Cultural Activities: Equally luminous is the department’s cultural spirit. Our students have regularly engaged with creative writing, artistic and cultural expression, shaping the college’s place in the artistic landscape of the district with originality and confidence.

Wall Magazine: Students regularly contribute to the departmental wall magazine, showcasing creative writing and literary critiques.

Mentoring: A dedicated mentoring system where faculty members provide both academic and personal guidance to students.

Research Focus: The department maintains a strong link with the University of North Bengal and Cooch Behar Panchanan Barma University. Students from this institution are regularly accepted in these two universities for their masters and PhD.
