Academic Framework

Under the framework of the National Education Policy 2020 and the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) curriculum implemented by the University of North Bengal, the Department of Sanskrit adopts a multidisciplinary and student-centric academic structure. The curriculum is designed to ensure depth of knowledge, skill development, and academic flexibility in accordance with national higher education reforms.

Major: The Major course offers in-depth study of Sanskrit literature, grammar, philosophy, and poetics. It develops advanced textual understanding, analytical ability, and research aptitude. The programme prepares students for higher studies and academic careers.

Minor: The Minor course provides foundational knowledge of Sanskrit language and selected literary texts. It enables students from other disciplines to gain cultural and linguistic awareness. The course supports interdisciplinary learning.

Skill Enhancement Course (SEC): SEC focuses on practical applications such as communicative Sanskrit, translation, and manuscript-related skills. It enhances employability and applied knowledge. The course promotes skill-based learning.

Interdisciplinary Course (IDC): IDC introduces Sanskrit knowledge systems to students of diverse disciplines. It highlights connections between Sanskrit and philosophy, culture, and traditional sciences. The course fosters integrative and multidisciplinary thinking.

Ability Enhancement Course (AEC): AEC strengthens reading, writing, and comprehension skills in Sanskrit. It builds grammatical accuracy and basic translation ability. The course enhances linguistic proficiency for academic use.

Teaching & Learning Methodology

Lecture Method: Core concepts of Sanskrit literature, grammar, and philosophy are delivered through structured lectures. Emphasis is placed on textual explanation and conceptual clarity.

Interactive & Discussion-Based Learning: Classroom discussions and question–answer sessions encourage critical thinking and active participation. Students are motivated to interpret texts independently.

The Department of Sanskrit encourages research in classical literature, grammar, philosophy, and Indian Knowledge Systems with a strong emphasis on critical textual analysis. It promotes interdisciplinary inquiry and exploration of the contemporary relevance of Sanskrit traditions. Special attention is given to manuscript studies and preservation of classical sources.
